Afternoon Tea at the Lough Erne Golf Resort

I find that afternoon tea is the one time in my life I get to properly feel sophisticated. Maybe it’s the dainty sandwiches, or drinking from a tea cup. I get to feel a more refined human being for an hour or two.

When at home in Fermanagh, the Lough Erne is always my first choice for afternoon tea. I’ve always found  a homely element to this hotel (there’s always a turf fire burning), not to mention it’s beautiful grounds. I was delighted when my cousin offered to take my Grandmother and myself there one afternoon.

The Lough Erne Golf resort is Fermanagh’s only five-star hotel  opened in 2007 and has since had vast international attention. They were a sponsor for Rory McIlroy (before Nike monopolised him), hosted the G8 in 2013 and their golf course designed by Nick Faldo will be the home of the Irish Open in 2017.

The location for afternoon tea has changed recently. Previously,  it was held close to the reception area, however, some guests found it to be quite cold due to the outside air coming from the busy front doors. It is now held in the Members Loft with beautiful views of Lough Hume. It is further away than you would expect, however, a concierge guides you there.

We were greeted by Nuala, who has worked on afternoon tea since the resort opened. From our seats, we were able to look out at the beautiful views and the mediocre weather! Before ordering, Nuala brought us samples of each tea to smell. She has a fantastic knowledge of these teas, which varied from some chai teas to fruit teas. They have some unusual names such as Hot Toddy and Royal Gunpowder. I would recommend the fruit teas (one is similar to a hot Ribena!) and Irish Whiskey Cream (I call it chocolate tea).

There are different versions offered, from traditional afternoon tea which you can add a glass of champagne to. During the weekend, there is the option of a chocolate afternoon tea. I have never ordered this – I think I am afraid of it being rather sickening!

Patiently waiting for the tea to brew

When the tea is delivered to your table, you are given a three-minute timer so you know when it has finished brewing. As I was pouring our tea, the food was served on a three tier tray. On the bottom  a scone with cream, the middle plate has four sandwiches and the top tier is full of treats. My favourites were the coronation chicken sandwich, the shortbread and the simple strawberry coated in white chocolate. If I had to be picky, I would have preferred a plain scone (the raisins just don’t do it for me).

I loved the personal service I received here, especially by Nuala. I couldn’t fault her at all. With the splendid views on offer and the amazing selection of teas I think the Lough Erne Golf Resort is the premier destination for afternoon tea in County Fermanagh.

Hey Lisa! It’s a great place to go for it – can walk off all the cakes after on the grounds! They have a few green teas. I didn’t even consider them as I’m not too big a fan but you would actually have a choice of green tea.

You should come down on a day when the weather is good – lots of places for a wee dander after!
Norr & Brown is officially on the list! I love exploring new and different places. All tips appreciated!
