The Best Laid Plans…

I haven’t written for a while and a lot has happened in that time. My original plan was to fly to Bangkok and take it from there. Well. I’m not there. I’m not even in south-east Asia. I’m writing this from Sydney, Australia!

So, what happened? One day I was browsing jobs abroad and noticed hotel management positions in European ski resorts. Ten days later, I arrived in Geneva and was on a bus to the top resort of Courchevel, France. This was not something I put a lot of thought into. I love working in hospitality (I had been working as a Weekend Manager of a Guest House) and saw this as the next step. I never thought about the duration of the work (November to April). I don’t think it really occurred to me that I would be cold for six months.

I was waking up to beautiful views each day, but from early on in training I knew my heart would not be in it. This was not where I wanted to be. I wanted to be exploring the other end of the world.

So, I flew home.

When I got home I immediately started pricing Bangkok flights. I was about to make it happen when David (oh yeah, there’s a boy – he’s been in Australia since November 2013) was having trouble with his second year visa, so I thought about everything for less than a second and booked a flight to Sydney for five days later.

Was this decision influenced by a boy? I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t. However, I’m now living in a city where I have always wanted to go and spend time. I’m also going to have to get a job. Believe it or not, Sydney is more expensive than Bangkok.

Have you ever made realised that where you were wasn’t where you wanted to be? What did you do about it?
